In 2008, Shelters for Israel built a new recreational park at Ben Yakir Youth Village for at risk boys. Located north of Netanya, Ben Yakir is a therapeutic boarding school for 120 at risk adolescent boys—primarily immigrants from Ethiopia—with acute social problems, often accompanied by learning disabilities. A religiously observant village, the professional residential care and treatment offered at Ben Yakir provides the intensive intervention that these youth need to thrive and become productive members of Israeli society. This outdoor recreational facility equipped with various types of exercise equipment is helping improve the physical fitness and self-esteem of these at-risk boys.
